Sama
Designing Explainable Compatibility in Modern Dating
Sama is an astrology-based dating app designed for people who believe compatibility should be understood, not guessed. This UX case study explores how trust, clarity, and emotional decision-making can reshape the dating experience in India-a market where cultural context, family expectations, and personal belief systems play vital roles in relationship-building.
Rather than treating astrology as a gimmick or gatekeeping mechanism, Sama positions it as a language of understanding. The goal is not to predict love, but to reduce confusion and help users make more intentional choices about where to invest their emotional energy.
The Reality of Modern Dating in India
The Current Landscape
Dating apps today prioritize speed, volume, and surface-level attraction. For many users in India, this creates fatigue instead of confidence. Endless swiping, shallow conversations, and misaligned intentions leave people exhausted and disillusioned.
Dating is not only about attraction. It's about intention, alignment, and long-term compatibility-concepts that feel absent from most platforms.
The Cultural Gap
Astrology already influences how people evaluate relationships in India, yet most dating platforms do not acknowledge this meaningfully. Users check zodiac signs privately, consult horoscopes with family, and make decisions based on compatibility beliefs-all outside the app experience.
This disconnect creates friction between how people actually think about relationships and what tools are available to support those decisions.
The Core Problem
Absence of Explainable Compatibility
The problem is not whether astrology belongs in dating apps. The problem is the absence of explainable compatibility frameworks that help users understand potential connections before emotional investment.
Users want fewer matches, not more
Quality and intentionality matter more than endless options that create decision paralysis.
They want clarity before emotional investment
Understanding potential friction points early reduces anxiety and helps people make better decisions about where to focus their energy.
They need context, not just attraction
Physical attraction and shared interests are starting points, but deeper alignment around values, communication styles, and life approach creates lasting connections.
Product Vision
Sama is an astrology-based dating app designed to help users understand how and why they connect with someone-not to dictate outcomes, but to provide context for more thoughtful emotional decisions.
Astrology as Context
Astrology is used as a framework for understanding, not as a rulebook that limits choice. It explains tendencies without judgment.
Thoughtful Decisions
Sama supports emotional clarity by surfacing insights that help users decide where to invest their time and vulnerability.
Preserved Agency
Users maintain full control over their choices. Compatibility insights inform decisions but never block connections.
Core Concept - Taar
Taar represents the invisible thread of alignment between two people. It's the central design metaphor that makes compatibility tangible and understandable.
Strong Taar highlights ease
When two people share strong Taar, the app surfaces areas where communication flows naturally, values align, and emotional rhythms match. These insights help users recognize why a connection feels comfortable.
Weak Taar explains friction
When Taar reveals potential friction points, the explanation is neutral and educational. It doesn't label anyone as incompatible-it simply names tendencies that might require more awareness or effort.
Taar never blocks connection
Compatibility insights are always informational, never prescriptive. Users can choose to engage with anyone regardless of their Taar reading. The goal is clarity, not control.
Research Overview
The research phase focused on understanding how people in India currently use astrology when making dating and relationship decisions. Rather than validating whether astrology "works," the emphasis was on uncovering mental models, emotional drivers, and decision-making patterns.
01
Recruitment and Screening
Five participants were selected across different cities, age groups, relationship statuses, and belief intensities-from casual astrology enthusiasts to deeply committed believers.
02
In-Depth Interviews
60-90 minute conversations explored dating habits, astrology usage, emotional decision-making, family influence, and moments of anxiety or confidence in relationships.
03
Behavioral Mapping
Participants walked through their current dating app usage and explained when, how, and why they consult astrology-revealing gaps between their needs and available tools.
04
Insight Synthesis
Patterns emerged around trust, anxiety reduction, cultural alignment, and the desire for explainability over scoring. These insights became the foundation for Sama's design principles.
User Research Questionnaire

Meet Ananya
Ananya, 26, Mumbai
Product Analyst

Ananya actively uses multiple dating apps but always checks zodiac compatibility before allowing herself to get emotionally invested in someone. For her, astrology serves as a rationalization tool-it helps her trust her instincts and reduce the anxiety that comes with vulnerability.
"I just want to know what I'm getting into. Astrology helps me feel less stupid for trusting my gut."
She doesn't need astrology to tell her what to do, but she appreciates having a framework that validates her gut feelings. When she feels drawn to someone, checking their sign helps her feel less impulsive and more intentional.
Dating app experience
“I use dating apps on and off. Honestly it gets exhausting. You talk to someone for a bit, it feels promising, then it just fades. After a while I stop taking it seriously.”
Astrology in relationships
“I would not say I am hardcore into astrology, but I do check. Especially if I am starting to like someone. It is more like reassurance.”
When astrology comes in
“Not immediately. Usually after a few conversations when I am already a little invested.”
Effect on confidence
“Yes. Sometimes if the compatibility looks bad, I start overthinking things that I would normally ignore.”
Decide or explain
“Explain. I do not want it deciding for me. But it helps me make sense of my feelings.”
Sharing birth details
“I am okay sharing it if the app clearly explains what it is used for. Otherwise I would hesitate.”
Explainable compatibility
“I think it would make me less anxious. At least I would know what I am walking into.”
What astrology should not do
“It should not scare people or make everything feel doomed.”
Reducing dating fatigue
“Less confusion. I just want to know what is real and what is not.”
Meet Rohit
Rohit, 30, Delhi
Marketing Manager

Rohit strongly believes in astrology and regularly checks kundli matches before pursuing relationships seriously. He finds modern dating apps chaotic and disconnected from his belief-driven approach to decision-making.
For Rohit, astrology isn't just a curiosity-it's a practical tool that his family has always used to evaluate compatibility. He feels frustrated that dating platforms ignore this reality, forcing him to manage two separate processes: finding attraction on apps and checking compatibility offline.
"If astrology already exists in my life, why does dating pretend it doesn't?"
Dating app experience
“I feel most dating apps are very surface level. It feels like people are just passing time.”
Astrology in relationships
“For me it matters a lot. I believe long term compatibility is not random.”
When astrology comes in
“Quite early. I do not like getting emotionally involved and then finding out it will not work.”
Effect on confidence
“Yes, definitely. If charts align, I feel more comfortable putting effort.”
Decide or explain
“Honestly both. It helps me decide where to invest my time.”
Sharing birth details
“I am fine sharing it. Astrology needs correct data anyway.”
Explainable compatibility
“It would reduce trial and error. Dating already takes enough energy.”
What astrology should not do
“It should not be treated like a joke or just another gimmick.”
Reducing dating fatigue
“More seriousness and intention from the platform.”
Meet Sanya
Sanya, 24, Bengaluru
MBA Student

Sanya enjoys astrology casually and often uses it as a lighthearted conversation starter on dates. She reads her horoscope, shares memes about zodiac signs, and finds compatibility discussions fun-but she doesn't want astrology to dictate her romantic decisions.
"It's fun when it explains things, not when it tells me what to do."
For Sanya, astrology works best when it explains patterns she's already noticed. She appreciates when it offers language for understanding dynamics in her relationships, but she rejects any framework that feels limiting or prescriptive.
Dating app experience
“It gets boring. Same hi hello, same questions. I lose interest quickly.”
Astrology in relationships
“I enjoy astrology content, but I do not live by it. It is more for fun.”
When astrology comes in
“Mostly as a conversation thing or something to laugh about.”
Effect on confidence
“It does not really affect my confidence much. I just find it interesting.”
Decide or explain
“Explain. I would not want an app deciding my relationships.”
Sharing birth details
“I am okay if it is optional. I would not want it to be forced.”
Explainable compatibility
“It would make conversations more interesting for sure.”
What astrology should not do
“It should not feel preachy or overly serious.”
Reducing dating fatigue
“Better conversations. Less awkward small talk.”
Meet Vikram
Vikram, 28, Jaipur
Software Engineer

Vikram dates with long-term intent and knows that horoscope matching will become essential once his family gets involved. He's comfortable with this cultural reality, but current dating apps feel misaligned with how relationships actually progress in his life.
"Why would I waste time building something that my family will later reject anyway."
He often finds himself investing months into building connections, only to face compatibility concerns from family later. This creates a painful inefficiency-emotional investment followed by practical rejection based on criteria he could have considered earlier.
Dating app experience
"I end up wasting time. Things go well and later family compatibility becomes a problem."
Astrology in relationships
"It is important in my family, so it matters to me too."
When astrology comes in
"Early. I prefer to know upfront."
Effect on confidence
"Yes. If it matches, I feel safer continuing."
Decide or explain
"Decide. It helps avoid problems later."
Sharing birth details
"I am used to sharing it. That part does not bother me."
Explainable compatibility
"It would save effort and emotional stress."
What astrology should not do
"It should not push people into marriage immediately."
Reducing dating fatigue
"Alignment with real life expectations."
Meet Priya
Priya, 32, Chennai
Consultant

Priya believes astrology reveals deeper personality traits and relationship tendencies that aren't visible in profile photos or brief conversations. She values the framework it provides for understanding compatibility beyond surface-level attraction.
"I'm fine sharing data if it's treated with respect and purpose."
However, she's cautious about sharing sensitive birth data with apps. She expects platforms to treat this information with respect, transparency, and clear purpose. Privacy violations or careless data handling would immediately break her trust.
Dating app experience
“It feels emotionally draining. You never know where things are going.”
Astrology in relationships
“I believe astrology shows deeper patterns. Not fate, but tendencies.”
When astrology comes in
“After initial interest, before commitment.”
Effect on confidence
“Yes. It gives me a sense of grounding.”
Decide or explain
“Explain. It gives context to behavior.”
Sharing birth details
“I need transparency. If the app is clear, I am open.”
Explainable compatibility
“It would help me trust the process instead of doubting myself.”
What astrology should not do
“It should not oversimplify people into labels.”
Reducing dating fatigue
“More emotional clarity and honesty.”
Key Insights from Research
Astrology explains attraction more than it decides outcomes
Participants didn't use astrology to determine whether they should date someone. Instead, they used it to understand why they felt drawn to certain people and what dynamics might emerge in the relationship.
Understanding compatibility reduces emotional anxiety
Knowing potential friction points in advance helped users feel more prepared and less vulnerable. Anticipating challenges made them feel more confident rather than discouraged.
Externalizing mismatch softens rejection
When incompatibility could be attributed to astrological factors, it felt less personal. This allowed both parties to move on without internalizing failure or blame.
Birth data requires trust and clear intent
Users were willing to share sensitive information like birth time and location, but only if the platform demonstrated respect, transparency, and a clear value exchange.
Cultural context is missing from most dating apps
Existing platforms feel designed for Western dating norms. Indian users wanted tools that acknowledged family involvement, long-term intentions, and belief systems that already shape their decisions.
Personas Derived from Insights
Profile: Open-minded but cautious. Uses astrology for emotional reassurance and pattern recognition.
Goals: Find genuine connections without wasting time on misaligned matches. Reduce anxiety around vulnerability.
Pain Points: Overwhelmed by endless options. Struggles to identify who's worth emotional investment.
Needs: Clarity and context before committing emotionally. Tools that explain compatibility without being prescriptive.
Profile: Deeply respects astrology. Integrates it into major life decisions, including relationships.
Goals: Date with long-term intent. Ensure family approval by considering compatibility early.
Pain Points: Modern apps ignore belief systems. Wastes time on connections that won't satisfy cultural expectations.
Needs: Upfront compatibility filtering. Respect for traditional frameworks within a modern dating experience.
Competitive Landscape
The dating app landscape in India currently offers two extremes: mainstream platforms that prioritize speed and volume, and astrology-focused or matrimonial platforms that enforce commitment too early or lack strong UX foundations.
1
Mainstream Dating Apps
High engagement, poor intentionality. Focus on volume over compatibility. Astrology treated as novelty feature at best.
2
Astrology-Focused Platforms
Strong belief alignment, weak execution. Often feel dated, overly rigid, or lack the polish users expect from modern apps.
3
Matrimonial Platforms
Family-first approach, heavy commitment pressure. Designed for arranged marriages, not exploratory dating. Too formal for younger users.

Sama's positioning: Sits between dating and matrimony. Offers intentionality without premature commitment. Respects belief systems while preserving personal agency.
Product Strategy
Helping users decide where to invest emotionally
Explainability over scoring
No compatibility percentages or binary yes/no verdicts. Instead, provide nuanced explanations that help users understand relationship dynamics and make informed decisions.
Trust over speed
Prioritize building user confidence and safety over maximizing swipes. Quality connections require time, care, and transparent communication from the platform.
Emotional clarity over engagement mechanics
Design for meaningful decision-making, not addictive usage patterns. Success means helping users find the right person, not keeping them endlessly engaged.
The north star metric isn't daily active users or messages sent-it's whether users feel more confident and less anxious about their dating decisions after using Sama.
Experience Principles
These principles guided every design decision throughout the Sama experience, from onboarding flows to compatibility explanations to conversation features.
Respect belief without enforcing it
Acknowledge that astrology matters to users without requiring them to follow its guidance. Provide context and insights while preserving full autonomy over decisions.
Reduce anxiety at key moments
Dating involves vulnerability and uncertainty. Design interventions that provide reassurance during high-anxiety moments: before messaging someone, after being rejected, when deciding whether to meet in person.
Translate astrology into human language
Avoid jargon, cosmic references, or mystical language. Explain astrological concepts using clear, everyday terms that anyone can understand regardless of their belief level.
Preserve user agency throughout the journey
Never use compatibility as a filter or gate. Information should empower choice, not restrict it. Users always maintain control over who they talk to and when.
End-to-End User Journey

Thinking UI vision
The following screens are conceptual references designed to communicate intent and experience principles, not final visual design. They represent thinking, not pixel-perfect execution.
Why rethink dating apps
Most dating platforms optimize for speed, volume, and engagement metrics. This creates fatigue, anxiety, opaque recommendations, and low trust. Users are asked to decide quickly without understanding why someone is shown.
Understanding is missing from modern dating.
How Sama works
  • Taar is a visible alignment system, not a prediction
  • Alignment is based on intent, values, communication style, and conflict approach
  • Deep astrology is integrated as a language of tendencies, not fate
  • Astrology informs emotional rhythm, communication patterns, and stress response
  • Every recommendation is explainable in plain language
Taar explains alignment. It does not decide outcomes.
How trust is preserved
  • Explicit gender and pronoun preferences enforced strictly
  • City and radius based discovery only
  • Progressive disclosure using icons to reduce cognitive load
  • Card based discovery, not swipe driven
  • Fully responsive and accessible by default
  • High contrast mode and keyboard support built in
Users only see who they choose to see, and always know why.
Sama treats dating as a thoughtful decision, not a game.
Delight Through Understanding
Taar Moments are gentle nudges that surface throughout the experience, offering insights that explain alignment or friction without judgment. These micro-interactions reduce emotional fatigue and build trust over time.
"You both value deep conversations-this is a great foundation for meaningful connection."
"Your communication styles are different. Being aware of this early helps you navigate misunderstandings."
"You share similar emotional rhythms, which means you'll likely feel comfortable opening up."
These moments aren't notifications demanding action-they're optional context that appears when users need reassurance or clarity. The tone is warm, non-judgmental, and always oriented toward user agency.
Early Explorations and Sense-Making
Before diving into pixel-perfect designs, we focused on understanding the fundamental structure, user flow, and emotional landscape of Sama. These early explorations helped us shape ambiguity into clarity, prioritizing experience over aesthetics.
Exploring structure before style: From rough onboarding flows to profile information hierarchy, these sketches helped us visualize user journeys and test how compatibility explanations could fit into small screens.
Testing how compatibility explanations fit into small screens, and iterating on conversation and reflection prompts to ensure a thoughtful user experience.
Mapping moments where users need reassurance and understanding emotional pacing before interaction design.

Understanding emotional pacing was critical; identifying points of anxiety and opportunities for clarity guided our structural decisions.
